Cruces
Cruces explores the forms taken by flamenco from its staging to intimacy.
Cruces takes a close look at the dramaturgy of the staging of flamenco. It is a proposal of asymmetric encounters between baile, cante, toque and percussion in which the hierarchical structures that have traditionally governed its codes are made flexible. The four performers intertwine with one another to arrive at a place of concurrence: the place where all four spin and allow us to observe their permeability. Touching their intimacy.
The critic Sara Esteller has said, “The path that José Manuel Álvarez has chosen is clear but not straight. It forks off on paths and tracks that, without going too far from flamenco, take it close to other languages. After two decades working as a flamenco dancer in tablaos, under the direction and gaze of others, he is now shedding his skin to leave behind the most deliberate part of the art that he knows so well, to let himself be carried away by impulses and intuitions that arise within him as a creator.”
The company will host a post-performance discussion on 5 March.
