Máquinas Sagradas (Sacred Machines)
Filatures at the MUHBA Oliva ArtésJuan Carlos Lérida approaches the rhythm and the dynamics of a mechanical and sculpture workshop, to create a show that seeks out flamenco in bodies and everyday spaces.
In Máquinas Sagradas Juan Carlos Lérida, accompanied by the cantaor El Pirata, investigates the encounter with guilds, workers and groups, creating a site-specific piece confirming with flamenco and other languages how bodies and spaces are affected. Máquinas Sagradas, premiered in a car workshop in Manresa, is a site-specific piece that adapts and is transformed according to the memory and the nature of the artisanal or industrial space where it is situated. In the words of the choreographer: “I was looking for the ordinary in the bodies of flamenco. Now I look for flamenco in bodies and everyday places.”
Juan Carlos Lérida is a flamenco dancer, choreographer and pedagogue, winner of the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona, 2007 Extraordinary Prize. Since 2002 he has been the professor of Flamenco, Contemporary Dance and Composition at the Institut del Teatre. He has co-directed shows by creators like Joaquim Cortés or Belén Maya and he has also created different pieces himself. He has been the curator of the Cicle Flamenco Empíric at the Mercat de les Flors and is currently the director of the Flamenco Festival in Düsseldorf, Germany.
