VIA KATLEHONG
Through its performances, the company Via Katlehong Dance defends the Culture Pantsula. In the 60s and 70s, under the apartheid regime in South Africa, rural black populations are displaced from large cities and regrouped in municipalities.
It is in these ghettos, where unemployment and crime prevail, where the Pantsula culture is born, with which all the youth of these municipalities are identified. Like hip hop in the United States, the Pantsula culture is a lifestyle that includes fashion, music, dance, gesture codes and conversation. Like hip hop, he finds his field of expression on the street.
In the 1990s, the company Via Katlehong Danse begins to dance in protest by young people in poor neighborhoods, through their creations, shows that combine Pantsula dance, a kind of non-acrobatic but virtuous hip hop because of its speed, Percussive clappers with iron shoes, palms and rubber boots.
The participants in the workshop will enjoy an introduction to these dances and their Pantsula & Gumboots culture. Crying, whispering, crushing! A festival full of dynamism and fury of life.
