In this vibrant and carnivalesque piece, ten performers portray a group searching for their identity to the beat of footwork music.
In Carcaça, a cast of ten performers portrays a group searching for their identity in a physical, intuitive flow. The piece, by the Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira, starts with lively footwork that gradually forms a vibrant, rebellious and carnivalesque body. A demonstration of Ferreira's work, this performance turns dance into a tool for investigating community, the construction of a collective identity, memory and cultural crystallisation. This piece is one of the few selected by the Big Pulse Dance Alliance, an initiative promoted by the most prestigious dance festivals in Europe, which helps young artists create large-scale pieces.
Marco da Silva Ferreira is a self-taught Portuguese choreographer who learned from urban dance styles with Afro-descendant influences. Between 2002 and 2010, the orientation and language of his dance style diversified and moved towards contemporary improvisation and composition, and in 2010 he won the So You Think You Can Dance reality show in Portugal. A professional performer since 2008, he’s worked with André Mesquita, Hofesh Shechter, Sylvia Rijmer, Tiago Guedes, Victor Hugo Pontes and Paulo Ribeiro, among others. A highlight of his career so far has been HU(R)MANO, a piece that was part of Aerowaves Priority Companies in 2015 and was performed on national and international circuits until 2018.
