Pode Ser+:Bouffées
Pode Ser is a piece that illustrates the difficulty of being oneself. Leïla Ka ventures alone into a dialogue between different choreographic languages, in search of the multiple identities that make up a person.
Bouffées: Standing in front of the audience, five women are cleaning their tear-stained cheeks. What pain are they enduring? Leïla Ka imagines how to cure what is incurable, how to embrace pain and transform it into a mechanism for power and recovery.
Leïla Ka started to dance in Saint-Nazaire and was one of the performers of the well-known piece May B, with Maguy Marin. She used this experience to develop a danced theatricality that she applies to her creations. Her first solo was, in 2018, none other than Pode Ser, which has won six international awards. Author of other duets and solos, she has just released her first group piece, Maldonne. She is an associate artist at prestigious creation centres, including CENTQUATRE-PARIS. In 2022, she was recognised by French critics with the award for Emerging Choreographer, and won the 'Dance Elargié' award at the Theatre de la Ville de Paris, and in 2023, she was one of the selected artists for Aerowaves.
Resistance Movement :
War is not virtual; it affects real people. You will see this in a choreography performed by Daria Koval, a 27-year-old dancer from the city of Dnipro, in eastern Ukraine. She was in Kiev when the war started. “I thought I would never dance again,” says Daria, “because I realised that dancing is no longer something important. [...] Every time I dance about the war in my country I hope that maybe one day I will stop feeling this pain.” In Resistance Movement, Maciej Kuźmiński works closely with a refugee dancer from Ukraine, documenting her experience of war through voice and movement.
Since 2014, the Maciej Kuźmiński Company’s works have been performed more than two hundred times in twenty-two countries, with appearances in London, Berlin, Warsaw, The Hague, Jerusalem, Vilnius, Belgrade, Minsk and Tbilisi. The company has won more than twenty international awards and honours for its creations.
