A modern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new production. Christopher Wheeldon is reunited with the creative team who adapted Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale for the ballet: composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley.
This ballet is based on the novel by Laura Esquivel, a captivating family saga with a protagonist who expresses her intense emotions through cooking, with a surprising and dramatic impact on those around her. In this co-production with the American Ballet Theatre, Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra is the musical consultant for Talbot’s newly commissioned score, and Wheeldon has worked closely with author Laura Esquivel to reshape her richly layered story as an entertaining and engrossing new ballet.
